Upcoming Blue Moon July 31 2015

When I was a little girl I was always fascinated by the stars and the moon. My Dad and I would look at the constellations and would always keep up to date with upcoming events in the skies. We would research and try to view lunar eclipses, super moons and meteor showers.

The phrase ‘once in a blue moon’ is colloquially used to suggest that something is very rare. As a child I always wanted to see a blue moon that is mentioned in ‘The Faraway Tree’ stories by Enid Blyton. In the book ‘The Enchanted Wood’ there is a land that only stops spinning once in a blue moon (The Roundabout Land).

I had observed lunar eclipses when the moon turned red, but I always wondered about a blue moon. Red moons are much more common and are caused by lunar eclipses. Well the truth is that you can’t actually see a blue moon; it is actually an event that happens every few years in a lunar and solar calendars.

What is a Blue Moon?
There are actually 2 different definitions of what a blue moon is. The modern day definition of a Blue Moon is when there are 2 full moons in one month, the second of two full moon is the Blue Moon. An older definition of Blue Moon is that it’s the third of four full moons in a single season. This year in July there are two full moons.
