Laundry upgrade & linen storage ideas

Recently my mum decided that she needed to update their laundry, as the room was last painted and tiled about 15 years ago. The main idea was to maximise the amount of storage and fix the linen closet in the hallway.

The first thing we did was to order custom made cupboards that would fit into the tight space above the washing machine and dryer. She wanted to put all the poisonous chemicals up high, somewhere to store the iron and a tall broom cupboard.
Here you can see the cupboards after they were installed. There is plenty of storage space. The next thing we did was to buy some more modern laundry baskets for the dirty washing. Below are the new baskets.

We bought 2 baskets – one for colours and one for whites.

The last thing that needed to be updated was the hallway linen closet. When they first moved into this house 20 years ago, this cupboard also had the ducted heating service box inside it. This required ventilation louver doors. Since then the ducted heater broke down and was replaced with an external machine about 5 years ago. So ventilation was no longer needed in the linen closet. We decided that the louver doors were dated and sold them on EBay. We got a good price and used the money to buy 2 new frosted glass doors.

Here is the before and after photo. We were also able to give the shelves a fresh coat of paint. Click here to see mylinen closet organisation.
