Trick or treating 2014

This year Joshua was very excited about Halloween. He absolutely loved having lots of children come to the house and all the lollies! Here is a photo of use walking around our neighbourhood.

Our front counter in the entry was ready for all the trick or treaders! We had over 100 children come and visit our house. Here is a photo of some  of our friend's children in our neighbourhood.

Halloween trick or treat bags

Halloween is one of my favourite holidays of the year. However in Australia it has only started to take off in the last 10 years or so. We are lucky that we live in a suburb where there are lots of children that go trick or treating on Halloween (very different to when I was a child). Here is how we made Halloween treat bags for children visiting our house this year.

The Halloween bags at the front door ready to go for Trick or Treat!

Instructions:
Step 1: Get out all the lollies and candy you are going to use and place each type into a separate bowl. We had about 7 types of candy - peppermint leaves, gumballs, frogs, snakes, vampire teeth, monsters and bananas.
 Close up of lollies
Step 2: You  will something to put the lollies in. I bought about small 50 organza bags off EBay for about 10cents each last year. $5.00 for 50 bags. I got a gold pattern, as I also use these for Christmas treats too!

Step 3: Fill the bags with a mixture of the lollies. I tried to be consistent with how I filled the bags.
Step 4: Repeat until you have enough bags. I made about 30 bags.
I have put the leftover lollies in the Jack of lantern for anyone who might miss out at the end of the night.
Step 5: Then I placed them on a tray and onto a buffet near the front door ready to go for Halloween!

Halloween decoration shopping

Over the last month most of the local shops have put out displays with Halloween themed decorations, costumes and toys. Halloween is one of my favourite holidays of the year. However in Australia it has only started to take off in the last 10 years or so. We are lucky that we live in a suburb where there are lots of children that go trick or treating on Halloween (very different to when I was a child). Here are some of my favourite finds this year!
Here is the display in one of my favourite candle shops. I couldn't help but to get some Halloween lanterns for our front porch.

These are skull candle holders, but I might use them as drinking glasses!

Here is a really clever way to decorate the front foyer of our house. I have a mirror similar to this to put there. I also think I will make something similar to the black vases with sticks. I will also add some fake spider webs to it too!

I actually found this skull candle in the local surf shop! But it will look great on our dining table this year.

I LOVE this onesies. I wish Joshua was still small enough to fit in one.
Last I started to get some things ready for our costumes. I got Joshua a pumpkin hat and a Pooh bear trick or treat bag. I got myself a witch hat.
Last I also found Joshua some Halloween socks and some cupcake patty pans for Halloween. I have also started to make the bats and mini pumpkins for the front porch display and for the letterbox.

DIY Chicken wire picture frame to hold seeds

Here is my most recent project, an old frame with chicken wire added to peg up my vegie patch seeds. I got this idea from a friend who had something similar for photos.
Step One: Choose your frame to upcycle. My mum gave me this one ages ago.
Step Two: Remove the painting or picture and the cardboard inserts.
I recycled the wood and cardboard backings.
Step Three: Paint the frame with an all purpose primmer paint.
Step Four: Paint the frame with the colour you want it to be. I chose a metallic grey.
Step Five: Cut the chicken wire to size. Then use a strong staple gun to attach the chicken wire to the back. Make sure you pull the wire tight.
You may need someone to help pull the wire into position. I did!
Check you are happy with it.
Step Six: Cover the sharp edges of the wire with duct tape so you don't hurt yourself and don't dent the wall when you hang it up.

I added a blackboard heart too.
Step Seven: Then sort through the seeds you want to peg on the board.
Peg the seeds to the board.
Step Seven:  I got these cute heart pegs off eBay. I am going to use a different colour peg for each family of plants or season.
Step Eight: Hang up the finished product.
I added some pretty autumn leaves I found last week too.

Here is my cute upcycled seed holder.
This is where I will put the seeds that I am planting next.
This is an old seed banner that I had in the shed. So I added some to the corner.
