Chicken coop construction

Recently we decided we would get some chickens for our backyard. The first thing we realized that we would need was a chicken coop that would fit up to 5 chickens in it comfortably. After spending a few hours researching the best options for coops and talking to friends with chickens, we bought this chicken coop kit from the internet for a cheap price.
Afternoon One:
We picked up the chicken coop in pieces and spent the afternoon assembling all the pieces together.
Afternoon Two:
Once all the pieces were together, it was time to paint the coop. We plan to roof our chicken area, but it will still need exterior paint.

I chose a medium grey paint on the inside and outside of the coop, as I don’t want to have to scrub it down every time its gets dirty.

The roof was painted a darker shade of grey.
Afternoon Three:
I let the paint dry completely before we took the new coop outside to its new location. Now we are starting to build the chicken area!

More to come soon.

ANZAC Day biscuits

Crunchy and delicious, Anzac biscuits made with oats are a lower GI alternative to many packet biscuits and are cheap to make. Containing coconut, golden syrup and butter, these biscuits do not use egg as a binding agent.

  • 4 tbsp golden syrup
Method:
1. Turn oven to 160 degrees C. Lightly grease oven trays.

2. Place oats, flour, coconut, sugar in big mixing bowl.

3. Melt butter and golden syrup in saucepan. Take off heat.

4. Mix baking soda and boiling water in a cup. Add to melted butter mixture in the pan. Quickly add to big mixing bowl. Mix well.
5. Roll tablespoon full of the mixture into balls. Place on trays 5cm apart. Press lightly with fork.

Easter decoration ideas

Recently I went shopping at my local housewares shop and couldn't believe the amount of cute Easter decorations they had. I even got two packets of Easter eggs with string to hang from my Easter branch tree (more on that later). Some of these items will be great to set the Easter table and to place around the house to add to our Easter decorations.
Beautiful Easter chicken and bunnies figurines.

I got 2 of these to add to our chicken coop.

New pittosporum trees in garden

Recently we started planting the trees that surround the boundary of our backyard. We have chosen to use screenmaster pittosporums (Pittosporum tenuifolium).
This variety has an upright, dense growth with small rounded leaves. Screenmaster is tolerant of drought and coastal conditions. It grows to 4 meters in height and 2 meters wide.
Screenmasters should be planted about 1 meter apart to make a 'wall' of green trees. Our backyard is roughly 25 meters long by 22 meters wide. Therefore to edge the whole backyard in trees it is 25m left side + 25m right side + 22m back = 72 meters of garden.  That's 72 trees! Also it is 72 holes to dig and fill with fresh soil. So we made a start last weekend.

Here is what they look like a week later.

AFL Football gnomes

Here are our AFL footy gnomes. They were given to us recently for Ryan's 30th birthday. Last week the ALF season started for 2014, so we had to find a place in our garden for our footy gnomes. The yellow and black gnome is for Richmond Tigers and below the red and black is for the Essendon Bombers.
Go Tigers!
