Drag boat racing family day

All the males in my husband's family love going to the drag boat races once a month during the racing season. This was the first time that our 3 year old son went to the races. We made sure that he had ear muffs, as the loud noises the boats make often scares young children. Once Joshua got used to the boats he loved it.
The atmosphere at the races is very different to what I originally expected. There is rock music from the 90s blaring out of the speakers and hot food vans everywhere!

My son's favourite race was when 6 boats raced instead of the normal 2 boats.

We are looking forward to the next drag boat racing season, as Joshua will be able to show his little brother around.

Family trip to Melbourne Aquarium

Recently our family went to the Melbourne Aquarium when we stayed in the city for the weekend. We loved seeing all the different tanks that contained a variety of animals from deep sea starfish to sharks and stingrays.

The first area that we went to was set up like rock pools and you were able to touch and feel the sea creatures. The boys loved being able to see and feel the sea animals.

Then we saw many different types of crabs and sea spiders.
Later on you were able to go to an educational room that had lots of children's activities. Joshua's favourite was colouring in the sea creatures.

The sting rays and sharks up close.
 Joshua loved the sharks!

The aquarium even had tanks that contained turtles from fresh water and estuary environments. The turtles were very cute!

Lastly we saw the Antarctic penguin enclosure. Joshua loved seeing the penguins and remembered seeing the penguins at zoo.

Chicken area secure from predators and mice

About two months ago I was horrified to find a mouse in our chicken area. The unfortunate truth about mice is when you find one there is always more hidden from sight. So we decided to take action and find where they were getting in and block the hole.
I have always been hesitant to put rat or mice poison out in case the children or dog eat it. Also there is the possibly that our dog could eat a dead poisoned mouse and become very sick. Therefore we have always made sure that our chicken food in stored in metal containers in the shed that mice can’t eat through and that there is nothing to mice to stay in our shed or chicken area.

When we first made the chicken area, we made sure to put bird mesh (1cm x 1cm squares) underneath the whole chicken area so rodents couldn’t burrow in. Mice will eat through a lot of things, but they hate metal and will stay away. However there were a few breaks in the wire where water had run down the side of the shed and moved soil and the mesh.

We simply added extra bird mesh underneath the whole length of the shed on top of the pre-existing mesh. We then added a plank of wood to hold it down and secure it from any water runoff when it rains. Finally we added the chicken area floor bedding and straw on top.

Two months later we haven’t had any mice return yet…

Upcoming Blue Moon July 31 2015

When I was a little girl I was always fascinated by the stars and the moon. My Dad and I would look at the constellations and would always keep up to date with upcoming events in the skies. We would research and try to view lunar eclipses, super moons and meteor showers.

The phrase ‘once in a blue moon’ is colloquially used to suggest that something is very rare. As a child I always wanted to see a blue moon that is mentioned in ‘The Faraway Tree’ stories by Enid Blyton. In the book ‘The Enchanted Wood’ there is a land that only stops spinning once in a blue moon (The Roundabout Land).

I had observed lunar eclipses when the moon turned red, but I always wondered about a blue moon. Red moons are much more common and are caused by lunar eclipses. Well the truth is that you can’t actually see a blue moon; it is actually an event that happens every few years in a lunar and solar calendars.

What is a Blue Moon?
There are actually 2 different definitions of what a blue moon is. The modern day definition of a Blue Moon is when there are 2 full moons in one month, the second of two full moon is the Blue Moon. An older definition of Blue Moon is that it’s the third of four full moons in a single season. This year in July there are two full moons.

Full Moon: July 2, 2015 First Full Moon of month
Blue Moon: July 31, 2015 Second Full Moon of month (Blue Moon)

Family trip to Gold Coast theme parks

Recently we took a family trip to the Gold Coast theme parks with our 2 year old. He absolutely loved it. The Gold Coast is in Queensland, Australia and always has warm weather. Here are some snapshots from our trip.
We went on all the rides and took Joshua on the children rides he was allowed on.
Joshua loved the pools and water areas the most.
Then we saw the stunt driver show with lots of cars and tricks.

Our favourite part was the animals. We saw sharks, dolphins, penguins, polar animals and the tigers! Here are some snapshots.
